A curl routine isn't one-size-fits-all. What works beautifully for loose waves may do nothing for tight coils. The key is building a routine around your hair's specific needs not someone else's.
STEP 1: THE WASH DAY FOUNDATION
Wash day sets the tone for the whole week. Follow this order:
Pre-wash (optional but powerful): Apply coconut or olive oil 30 minutes before washing. This protects hair from hygral fatigue the damage caused by hair swelling with water.
Shampoo: Use a sulfate-free shampoo. Focus on the scalp, not the lengths. Let the water rinse the product down through the ends.
Deep condition: At least once a week, apply a deep conditioning mask. Leave on for 15–30 minutes under a shower cap. This is the single most impactful step for dry or damaged curls.
STEP 2: THE STYLING ROUTINE
Style your hair while it is soaking wet this is the most important rule for curly hair. Damp hair causes frizz.
1. Apply leave-in conditioner section by section
2. Apply curl cream or gel scrunch it in, do not rake
3. Let air dry OR use a diffuser on low heat
4. Once fully dry, scrunch out the cast (if using gel)
STEP 3: THE REFRESH ROUTINE (Between Wash Days)
You do not need to wash every day. Refresh curls between washes:
• Lightly wet hair with a spray bottle of water mixed with a small amount of leave-in conditioner
• Scrunch gently to reactivate the curl
• Apply a tiny amount of gel or cream to any frizzy sections
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH?
• Wavy hair (Type 2): Every 3–4 days
• Curly hair (Type 3): Every 5–7 days
• Coily hair (Type 4): Every 7–10 days
Over-washing removes the natural oils your scalp produces and those oils are your curls' best friend.
FINAL TIP
Give any new routine at least 4 weeks before judging results. Hair takes time to adjust, recover, and show improvement. Be patient, be consistent, and trust the process.
